In 2012 the ten largest food and beverage manufacturers alone spent more than $6.9 billion on food advertising and fast food spent an additional $4 billion on top of that. Virtually none of that money is spent on encouraging us to eat more vegetables! Unprocessed, low calorie foods like vegetables are neither profitable to sell nor particularly compelling to consumers. Food cues are most effective when they pitch highly rewarding foods rich in fat, sugar, salt, starch and calories. these are the foods that appear most often in advertisements.   *from The Hungry Brain by Stephan Guyenet, page 85.
